Leonie Roffe
About the Therapist
I am an LGBTQ+ affirmative and person-centred counsellor offering therapy face to face, online or over the phone. Being person-centred means the therapy is guided by you - I will tailor how I work to meet your therapeutic needs and help you get the most out of our time together. My role is to facilitate your growth and healing by giving you space to understand your experiences, emotions and thinking patterns, as well as supporting you in exploring the options you have to begin to move forward with your life.
LGBTQ+ Affirmative
As a queer therapist, it is important to me that my counselling approach is LGBTQ+ affirmative. This means I provide a safe, accepting space for clients of all genders and sexualities. I follow the Gender, Sexuality and Relationship Diversity (GSRD) model. This is a broader framework inclusive of anyone who feels their experiences do not fit the societal norm, for example, individuals who are polyamorous or practice kink.
Couples and Relationship Counselling
I use the term Couples and Relationship Counselling because I welcome all kinds of relationships into my practice. This might mean familial relationships, friendships, as well as romantic or sexual partnerships in which more than two people are involved.
I aim to help you identify where you each are at and where you want to be within your relationship, as well as what each of you need to move forward. As the therapist, and therefore someone on the outside looking in, I may notice some unhelpful patterns that are continuing to impact your relationship in a negative way. My role includes helping you become aware of these patterns as they happen, and findings new and healthier ways to navigate them.
Feminist-informed Counselling
My approach is informed by feminist theory. This means that I acknowledge we are all different: we are different in gender, race, class, as well as many other intersections. I understand that this means we are also sometimes treated differently to each other, and often treated unfairly. I may address the impact that oppression or experiences of discrimination can have on mental health, if this feels relevant to the counselling work.
Creative Counselling
For a lot of people, talking through their problems and feelings is really helpful and this is exactly what they want from counselling. Others may find it useful at times to be able to visualise how they feel in relation to their selves, their relationships and life experiences.
Sometimes it feels like there aren't the words to describe what we are experiencing. Working creatively, (drawing or using objects, for example), can allow us to see all of those things we would only normally experience inside ourselves, which can provide both clarity and a deeper connection to our feelings. I may ask if you would like to try using creative methods at times, it I think it may be helpful.
However, this is only an invitation, as I trust that you will use your sessions however is best for you.

Understanding and Working with Self Injury
Although I welcome clients from all 'walks of life', I specialise in issues related to gender, sexual and relationship diversity. As a bisexual woman myself, I hold a personal interest in working within LGBTQ+ communities. My professional experience of LGBTQ+ affirmative counselling began in my training days, when I completed my counselling placement hours at an LGBTQ+ mental health service in Brighton.
I have worked with a number of organisations and charities to provide mental health support to a wide range of communities local to Hastings. This has included offering counselling in schools, counselling young people via GP referrals, short term therapy for survivors of sexual assault.
I have a growing interest and level of experience in working with neurodiverse couples and individuals. I have specialist supervision and additional training to support my neurodivergent clients (ie: ADHD, ASC, dyslexia).
Some of the other issues I have experience in working with include:
· low self-esteem
· loss of identity
· suicidal ideation
· bereavement
· bereavement by suicide
· sexual abuse & rape
· depression
· work/ study related stress
· anxiety
· chronic illness
· life transitions
· childhood trauma
· ASD/ ADHD & living in a neurotypical society
· parenthood
· sexual issues
· self-harm
· intrusive thoughts
· relationships
