Brook Byrne
About the Therapist
I have been practising as a therapist since I qualified in 2015 with a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling & Psychotherapy from The University of South Wales. I am a registered member of BACP.
I am white, British, queer & trans. I have a mixed-class background, I'm able-bodied and I experience some aspects of neurodivergence. I continuously work to process the privileges as well as the challenges that these different identities bring. I hold high expectations of myself to practice in a way that is diversity-affirmative and anti-oppressive. Due to the privileges I hold I have blind spots and welcome direct feedback and criticism, especially if I have been hurtful.
In my practice I aim for a helpful balance of support (being alongside you and caring about your situation) understanding you (who you are in relationship to the culture in which you live/have lived), and challenge (encouraging you to grow when the moment is right). I would describe my style as a mixture of curious, sincere, direct, transparent and occasionally humorous.Â
I have been a long-term student of Process-oriented Psychology since 2016. I particularly value the focus on the development of a deeper understanding of the ongoing, systemic oppressions and power dynamics alive in the world today (racism, patriarchy, transphobia, classism, homophobia, ableism etc) and how the impact of these oppressions show up in us and in relationship. I bring this awareness and apply it to all of the work that I do.
In my spare time I can often be found walking or running outdoors, seeking deep relationship, playing sport, singing, pursuing self development or dancing

Fundamentally I support people to deepen their relationship with themselves and with each other. Sometimes this deepening doesn't take us to where we imagine it would. I follow what is already emerging in your experience and support you to embody that in life. Therapy can support us to discover new things about ourselves and our partners. Things that may surprise us or that we may be unsettled by, at least at first. As new things are uncovered and can be more in plain sight we can get to know them and see if they hold insight for our lives and relationships.
I work with couples who experience a lot of conflict, need support making sense of this and with developing new ways of communicating with each other. I work with those who're going through changes, who're questioning what keeps them together. I work with couples who are considering whether or not to separate and would like support navigating that process. I work with those who're navigating issues such as betrayal and trust and need help to understand each other more fully.
I work with couples in monogamous relationships as well as those in open or polyamorous relationships. I work with couples who are at the beginning of their journey of opening their relationship and those who have been practising for some time. Monogamy and non-monogamy are both valid forms of doing relationship/s and I will support you with what's right for you.
I also work with polyamorous groups who are in conflict and need support to work through it and to come to agreements and understandings.
I support LGBTQIA+ individuals with navigating their experience in this often unaccepting world. I work with people who're questioning their identify and would like to embrace all aspects of themselves. I support transgender folks to make sense of their experiences and (for some) navigate their transition.
