Skye Blyth-Whitelock
About the Therapist
I'm a qualified integrative counsellor, registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and community grief tender. I’ve worked in the charity sector throughout my career and in mental health and wellbeing for over ten years, managing service provision, offering one-to-one counselling and facilitating groups.
I welcome and enjoy working with all sorts of clients, with a range of experiences and identities, and have four main areas of focus:
Trauma: both historic and current, protracted and standalone incidents. This can include but is not limited to child abuse (sexual, physical and emotional) and neglect, domestic abuse, sexual violence, relational trauma, bodily trauma (e.g. accidents, medical errors, chronic health conditions). Trauma lives in our bodies, it changes and shapes us, and it shows up in our relationships to ourselves, each other and the world. My approach is not to "fix" - we are not broken - but to understand, be with and integrate these experiences, establishing a sense of safety and steadiness in your body-mind and your wider life.
I am currently completing an Advanced Certificate in Trauma Therapy with The Grove Practice, and I also work part-time as a Trauma Stabilisation Worker in a residential setting for women who have experienced violence and trauma throughout their lives and who use substances as a way to cope. Many of my clients have PTSD or Complex-PTSD.
Grief: This may be grief related to bereavement and loss but it may also be about disconnection and loneliness, relationship breakdown, painful things that have happened to us in our lives, or collective suffering, such as climate collapse, natural disaster and war. Grief is often too big for us to hold alone and I will be alongside you in your distress, rage and despair, so you don't have to face the darkness alone.
I hold community grief tending spaces both online for genderqueer / gender non-conforming people and in person in Brighton for anyone who is grieving.
Neurodivergence, especially ADHD, ADD and Autism / ASD: Most of my clients are neurodivergent and are adversely impacted by living in a world that is not designed for us. Through our work together, we explore the way you experience your neurodiversity, working to dismantle the internalised belief that something is inherently "wrong" with you. Together, we build effective resources for self-support and strengthen your confidence to advocate for yourself.
LGBTQIA+ People: Whilst queer people are all different and have a range of experiences and worldviews, like other minoritised groups, we also share common experiences. When we are being vulnerable and exploring our innermost world, as in therapy, it is particularly important that we do not have to explain or justify our queerness, that we are accepted as we are and how we live. I provide a space where you don't have to take extra time educating or explaining this world to me and where you can have the experience of being implicitly understood.

My approach to us working together
People often come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, disconnected or unsure where to begin but with a sense that they want things to be different. You may have specific issues you want to work on but you also don’t need to have the right words or a clear story to start - we can take things slowly and make sense of things together.
My approach is to be alongside you with care, warmth and understanding, so that you don’t have to navigate things alone. I take a whole person, holistic approach that affirms and welcomes all of you - your identities, experiences, thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations. As an integrative counsellor, I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches depending on what feels most helpful for you in the moment. In practice, this means I work responsively, rather than following a one-size-fits-all model.
I mostly offer talking therapy but at times I might suggest a simple exercise, like writing or moving, that taps into different parts of your body-mind, so you become more aware of thoughts or feelings that may have been held unconsciously. I also support you to identify and stay with sensations in your body, so that you can develop an increased bodily awareness, to understand and listen to what your body is communicating to you.
I work relationally, which means the relationship we build together is an important part of the therapy. Feeling safe, respected and understood is essential and I welcome clients sharing how it feels to work with me. I often check in about how our work together is going. This can help build trust and also gently highlight patterns that may show up in your other relationships.
For me, the personal is political. I am a member of the Feminist Therapy Network and of Therapists against Conversion Therapy and Transphobia (TACTT). I take an intersectional, anti-oppressive stance in my work that is affirming, compassionate and liberatory. I do not see distress as something that is "wrong" with you but as something that is shaped by the contexts and systems we live within. We can explore together how to face exclusion and injustice in a way that feels empowering for you, whilst celebrating the strengths and joys that your identity brings.

I offer a free, 15 minute phone chat before we start working together to discuss practicalities and so that you can ask me any questions you may have about counselling and the way I work. If you want to proceed, we will then have a 50-minute initial consultation session together, charged at the rate agreed per the fee structure below.
I operate a sliding scale of £60 - £90 for my sessions and ask clients to decide what they can afford to pay. Unfortunately my concessionary slots are currently full but please do email me to be added to my waitlist.
Other Practicalities
For online working, I will send you a Zoom link to join the session. Please ensure you have a confidential space to talk, a secure internet connection and a camera and microphone that works on your device.
