About the Therapist
My first experience of therapy, over a decade ago, was with an LGBTQ+ therapist. It was a liberating experience, being able to speak about aspects of my life that previously would have felt impossible to share. Now, as a therapist, having worked with queer people for many years across different LGBTQ+ organisations, I recognise the value in working with someone from your own community. My aim is to create a safe environment, where you can be free to express yourself in a way that feels authentic to you, and to explore aspects of your identity that are marginalised and othered by society.
My style as a therapist is engaged, collaborative and grounded. I put a lot of emphasis on creating a warm, welcoming environment from the very first session, with the knowledge that starting therapy with a new person can be a daunting process. I’ll be curious to hear not only what brings you to therapy, but how you like to communicate and what would make you feel comfortable to begin working together.
I offer a free 20-minute consultation to anyone interested in starting therapy with me. Please feel free to get in touch using my website and I’ll be happy to answer any questions and to hear what brings you to therapy: danmairtherapy.com

I am a member of the UKCP (UK Council for Psychotherapy) as a student and work regularly with a fully accredited UKCP supervisor.
My approach to therapy is both integrative and relational. Working integratively means I study a wide variety of psychotherapeutic modalities and draw from different aspects of my professional life. Beyond the theory, working integratively means I don’t have a one-size-fits-all approach with clients - I aim to find a unique way of working that matches both you and us as the relationship progresses and deepens.
Working relationally means I see the client-therapist relationship itself as a tool for healing and discovery. So much of what brings us to therapy originates from our relationships that for one reason or another have failed to give us what we need. Therapy offers an opportunity for a consistent, boundaried and authentic relationship which can help make sense of what we’re missing.
My approach is explicitly LGBTQ+ affirmative, using my own lived experience and my professional background and training in LGBTQ+ organisations to inform my practice. Whether you’ve come to therapy to talk about something specifically LGBTQ+ related or not, our identities seep into every aspect of life, and I endeavour to create a space where you can express yourself in a truly authentic way.
I am particularly aware of the overlap of queer identities with neurodiversity, and have considerable experience working with queer neurodiverse people, including those without a formal diagnosis.
