Chris White at Through the Door Counselling and Therapy
About the Therapist
I am Gay and identify with the gender Queer movement. I am proudly Nuerodivergent but this only came into my awareness later in life. I come from the North West but moved to the South when I was a child. I have made London my home for over 30 years, living between Clapham North and Brixton. I love the area for its diversity and energy. I believe in the importance of locality, and for this reason, I work for the Brixton branch of Lambeth and Southwark Mind, promoting awareness and helping out with its various services. Before I became a therapist, I trained in psychology and then used this to work in human understanding in industry. I then trained as a psychotherapist at T.A. East in London, which pays particular attention to the social environment in which we live in. Many of us suffer trauma from growing up in a hetro normative and neurotypical society and being oppressed by other aspects of our intersectionality. I like to celebrate difference in all its forms and believe people should be able to express themselves freely in terms of gender, sex and relationships.Â

My approach is always to start with you, the client, giving you unconditional positive regard and allowing you to lead the therapy, bringing what you want each time to the session. My therapy is flexible to fit different situations, and I work with a pluralistic tool kit based on an understanding of neurodiversity, the effect of the social environment, past experiences from childhood and genetic predispositions. I emphasise working in the relationship between myself and the client, including helping the clients examine their intersectional identity alongside working with their Gender, Sex, Relationship Diversity (GSRD).Â
I set up my own private practice in Summer 2024, offering online and face-to-face sessions from my home in London, SW4. I also work as a Lived Experience Consultant, South East London Mind, Brixton SW2 - I work sessionally for South East London Mind to promote and improve services using my therapeutic knowledge and lived experience of mental health issues of being neurodivergent and experiencing depression and anxiety.Â
I have worked as a voluntary counsellor for several organisations, including South East London Mind (SEL Mind) and East London Out Project (ELOP). I have experience working with Non-binary, Gay, Trans, Polyamorous and Demi-sexual patients, helping them navigate their gender, sexuality and relationship issues.Â
