David-John Cooke
About the Therapist
Since completing my training as a counsellor in early 2022, I have worked alongside multiple services including Serendipity Counselling (York), Phoenix Health & Wellbeing (Leeds), and MESMAC (Leeds). I also volunteered as a Samaritans for 5 years and currently work alongside a large EAP provider.
Alongside my work with charities and organizations, I run an online private practice where I offer sessions video and telephone sessions.
I was inspired to train and work as a counsellor by my own experiences as a client. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community who has sat in both the client and therapist's position, I understand the importance of acceptance within the therapeutic space, especially where a person's gender and sexual identity is concerned.
The purpose of my work is not to "fix", but to increase your understanding and awareness, ultimately helping you to make change where you feel change is needed, and to accept yourself on your own terms.

I am first and foremost a person-centred therapist, meaning that I do not give direct advice or instruction on how you should think, feel, or act within your life. My approach as a therapist is centred on providing you with an open space within which you can unapologetically be yourself, with the ultimate goal or understanding and accepting your life, and accepting your own power to make desired changes within your life.
I have extensive experience in supporting the LGBTQ+ community, including my work with MESMAC's counselling service. I have worked with a wide variety of subjects including:
- Coming out
- Social transition
- Dysphoria & gender incongruence
- Queer joy
- Internalized queerphobia
- Relationship diversity
I have also worked with trauma and abuse, homelessness, bigotry within the LGBTQ+ community, and compulsive behaviours related to sex and drugs use. Whoever you are, and whatever you are living with, you will be met with respect, your needs and concerns will heard and taken seriously.

My session fees charged as follows:
Serendipity York: £55 (in-person / video / telephone)
Private practice: £50 (video / telephone)
I offer a free thirty-minute consultation by video or telephone. This is an opportunity for us to discuss your aims, hopes, and concerns for therapy, and for you to ask any questions you may have about how I work as a therapist and what you can expect from our time together.
In our first session, we would discuss the contract underpinning our work together, including important details such as frequency and duration of sessions, payment, risk assessment, and the limits of confidentiality.
Sessions are typically conducted on a weekly or fortnightly basis, on a set day and time each week. I am happy to accommodate your needs as they change, such as if your personal routine requires us to be more flexible in when we meet.
The amount of time we work together will ultimately be decided by yourself. Whether our time together is short or long-term, I will be responsive to your needs as they develop.
