Debra Kurs- (Prof, Psyc, C. Dip, MNPCS)
About the Therapist
With over 40 years of professional experience, I began my career as an arts graduate, focusing on arts development to support communities. In the late 1980s, I earned a postgraduate qualification in Youth and Community Studies, which led me to work with young people and young adults in underserved communities. Throughout my career, I have worked with thousands of young people and witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by children growing up in poverty.
While managing a North Liverpool Youth Centre, I also spent several years lecturing Dip H.E. Youth Work students. In 2006 I accepted a three-year secondment offer and started working for the Liverpool Youth Offending Service during this time. I worked here in collaboration with a wide range of professionals and supported young people involved in the criminal justice system. By 2019, I had moved into education, working as a cover supervisor and supporting children and teens in a range of Merseyside-based schools. Post-COVID-19, I decided to reflect and explore alternative career options. In 2021, I decided to retrain as a hypnotherapist and counsellor.Â
Recognising that therapy is not accessible for all socio-economic groups, I offer my voluntary services to a local women's organisation through the Listening Ear initiative.
I am also a published author, currently adding the finishing touches to my next two books - Nurturing Your Inner Child and ADHD in Women. (Details to be posted in due course.)
My extensive experience has given me a profound understanding of the impact of negative childhood experiences, such as neglect, poverty, abuse, and family dysfunction, and how these affect individuals later in life. Having personally experienced the powerful positive effects of inner child therapy, I have used this approach with many clients and have witnessed their remarkable transformations.

My practice offers a safe, affirming space for people of all identities, especially those navigating sexuality, gender, rejection, or life transitions. I bring insight, empathy, and deep understanding to my work. I support both young people and adults through emotional challenges, identity exploration, and healing from societal oppression. I work relationally, with warmth, respect, and an unshakeable belief in your right to thrive. I work in a pluralistic way, inviting you to collaborate on a tailored package of therapy—putting you in control of your process. FAQ's
How do I know if your right for me ? I offer a free 30-minute initial consultation online. This allows you to assess my suitability as your therapist.
How long are the sessions? They typically last 50 minutes. Some people prefer 90 minutes (for an increased fee).Â
How much will each session cost me? The cost is £60 per session. I offer a limited number of low-cost sessions available for students, unemployed clients, and low-income clients. We can discuss the subject during the initial consultation.
Do you offer a block booking discount? If you wish to arrange a block booking, I offer a discounted package of £300 for six sessions.
How frequent will sessions be? You may wish to meet once weekly or twice weekly; the choice is yours.
What if I need to change my appointment? I will do my best to accommodate any changes to your appointments with notice.
What is the cancellation policy? I do ask for a 24-hour notice to cancel or change an appointment. This helps me effectively maintain my schedule and honour other commitments. If you do not show, I will assume you no longer want therapy.
How do I pay? I accept BACS transfers and cash. After booking, I will provide you with bank details.
