Dr Alastair Pipkin (Supervision)
About the Therapist
I am a registered Clinical Psychologist with the HCPC and fully accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist with the BABCP, and have completed BPS-accredited supervisor training. I have a wealth of experience working with LGBTQ+ people in and outside of the NHS, academia and co-produced research, and I really enjoy providing supervision to support others to feel confident and well equipped to make a difference for the communities we support.
I have supervised practitioner psychologists (clinical, counselling and forensic), trainee clinical and counselling psychologists, BABCP accredited CBT practitioners and psychotherapists from various backgrounds, at various stages of their career. I have provided specialist consultation and ad-hoc supervision on LGBTQ+ issues in the NHS (such as supporting trans individuals; working with sexuality and gender issues) and provided training for a number of NHS services on trans and broader LGBTQ+ mental health. In addition I have led, published and supervised various research studies on LGBTQ+ mental health, including compassion-focused therapy for trans and non-binary adults, social anxiety and OCD in LGBTQ+ people and appearance-related anxiety.

I worked in the NHS for 10 years providing psychological therapy for young people and adults, spanning mild to severe and complex presentations. Latterly, after working in an NHS Gender Service, I set up and led a psychology service in an acute adult inpatient hospital, where I provided clinical supervision and line management for a team of qualified practitioner psychologists. I have been providing therapy for LGBTQ+ adults spanning a range of issues for a number of years, and developed and delivered training for various organisations within and outside of the NHS.
In supervision, I take a collaborative approach, initially developing a contract regarding your wants and needs, shared expectations, understanding your preferred style and approach, goals, and setting the overall frame. I take a holistic view of supervisees to focus on your development, your containment as a therapist, and your wellbeing. I draw on a seven-eyed model of supervision, intersectionality and an integrative frame to clinical practice. You may also be looking to attain or maintain BABCP accreditation which I can help with.
