Dr Dane Duncan (Online)
About the Therapist
As a clinical psychologist offering online counselling and mental health support, I am dedicated to a set of core principles that shape every session. These values help me create an inclusive, respectful and empowering environment for all clients.
• 🧩 Separating You from the Issue
I see challenges as distinct from your identity. By recognising that the issue is separate from who you are, we can work together to achieve clarity, control and a renewed sense of progress.
• ⏰ Prioritising Early Support
In a time when timely mental health support can be hard to find, I focus on early intervention. This approach ensures that we address concerns before they become overwhelming, promoting lasting wellbeing.
• 🗣️ Celebrating Your Unique Voice
Your experience is uniquely yours. I encourage you to express yourself using your own language and cultural insights. By honouring your narrative, we build a therapeutic journey that is authentic and personally meaningful.
• 🏳️⚧ Affirmation of Identity
I provide a safe and supportive space where your authentic self is celebrated. Every session is an opportunity to affirm your gender and sexuality without judgement.
• 🤝 Inclusive, Culturally Competent Care
I am committed to understanding the diverse, intersectional experiences that shape your identity. My approach honours the unique cultural, social and personal narratives of trans, non-binary and queer individuals.
• 🌈 Empowerment Through Self-Definition
Your language matters. I encourage you to describe your experiences in your own words, empowering you to define your identity and journey on your terms.
• 🛡️ Safe, Confidential and Respectful Space
Creating a secure environment is paramount. I prioritise confidentiality, respect and psychological safety, ensuring you feel protected and supported throughout our work together.
• 🔍 Collaborative Exploration of Identity and Relationships
I believe in a shared, collaborative approach. Together, we explore your personal narrative, navigate challenges and celebrate the resilience that shapes your relationships and identity.

A Clinical Psychologist explores many places on their odyssey, beyond therapy. I have ventured through 14 years of experience in the NHS. I completed the saga of a 3 year Professional Doctorate training programme in Clinical Psychology at The University of East London, landing at HCPC accreditation. I have traveled through 6 years working at Great Ormond Street Hospital. I occasionally meander into teaching at the University of Hertfordshire or Narrative Therapy and Community Work Conferences on Social Constructionism themes and projects (such as Gender, Narrative, Systemic and Liberation Psychology). I lead the walk on Equality Inclusion and Diversity projects at my place of work. I also like to take detours into community therapy groups with Gendered Intelligence; care spaces for looking after other Clinical Psychologists, and supervision for other Clinical Psychologists. This epic journey had various therapy training adventures along the way Narrative Therapy (Level 2), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for adults and children (ACT DNA-V), Mentalisation Based Therapy (MBT), Narrative Exposure Therapy for Trauma (NET) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) training.
LGBT CLIENT TESTIMONIALS
"Working with Dane provided a supportive space where my husband and I could have those 'difficult' conversations, and could discuss our fears and anxieties in a way that had proven near impossible outside of a therapeutic environment. Dane's support helped us model how to have these potentially conflict-inducing conversations (rather than perpetually avoiding them). We also learnt how many skills and strengths we already had." [LGBT Couple]
"I began working with Dane to overcome issues I was having with my relationship to gender. Being something of an “overthinker”, I had found that I’d struggled to make progress with other therapists in that area. Dane’s approach worked very well for me, helping me out of a period of anxiety, depression and burn-out. He has helped me to begin a new chapter of self-determined exploration, guided by a deeper sense of self-awareness."
"At a time when I was struggling with isolation after my partner decided to move back to Spain after losing his job to Covid, and working through a process of reevaluating my life through a new lens of autism and ADHD, Dane’s approach was a real lifesaver in helping me reflect on my coping strategies, strengths and values. He was easy to reach out to, and online sessions suited me really well. His warmth and kindness helped me feel accepted and safe at a time when I’d had some horrific homophobic ableist online abuse that triggered old trauma. I feel that a good connection with a therapist such as Dane can be helpful not just in the moment, but at later times when we think back to those sessions and how helpful they were."
I have a strong interest in using a Narrative Therapy Framework to guide my work. This approach influences every stage of my process:
• 📖 Assessments: I listen carefully to your story with genuine curiosity, ensuring that every detail matters.
• 🔍 Formulation: Together, we make sense of your challenges and co-create a clear picture of your needs.
• 🚀 Therapy: We work collaboratively towards the changes you want to see in your life.
I also have a special focus on working with families, couples and groups through Collective Narrative Practice. My thesis used this framework to design a therapy group called "The Theatre of Life" (Duncan, 2017), engaging the community in action research—from design to data collection and analysis. This approach has since been successfully implemented in the NHS.
• 🏳️⚧️ Additionally, I have received specialist training with Gendered Intelligence, equipping me to work effectively with gender diversity in therapy.
• 🔄 I also lead regular special interest groups to stay updated with current research and innovative practices.
This blend of narrative and collective practices underpins my commitment to providing thoughtful, inclusive and effective therapy.
