About the Therapist
Hi, I'm Ellis J. Johnson. I am a fully qualified Psychodynamic Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, trainer, supervisor, speaker and group facilitator with extensive experience in working alongside trans, non-binary, queer and questioning people. I deliver training to counsellors in working affirmatively around gender and also deliver training in trans awareness, and in anti-racist practice, to organisations around the country and internationally. I also provide external supervision and consultation for a number of third-sector organisations. In the past I have provided counselling for an NHS Wellbeing service, a charity offering free counselling to trans and non-binary people, and I have worked with students in a University counselling service. I also spent several years working in the voluntary sector as a mental health advocate, trainer and group facilitator.
As a transgender man with mixed roots, I am passionate about attending to the intersections of race, class, gender and sexuality in therapy and I have a particular interest in coloniality and decolonising our understandings of gender, sexuality and spirituality.

The modality I use is Psychodynamic, which involves bringing unconscious drives and patterns into conscious awareness. Alongside family and relationship dynamics largely developed in childhood, we may explore defence mechanisms that at one time have been vital to our survival, but have now become dysfunctional. We can then explore how we might be able to witness and to heal those parts of ourselves that needed defending and protecting, and move towards a more integrated sense of self. My work is explorative and largely non-directive, meaning that we will work with whatever you chose to bring, or whatever arrives for us, on the day of the session. I will work to hold a space for you to explore at your own pace, and we will strive to make sense of the bigger picture together. My work is influenced by spirituality and by intersectional (Black) feminist theory, which takes into account how intersecting oppressive structures in society and throughout history can have an adverse effect on our mental, spiritual and physical health, particularly for those racialised as 'Other', or otherwise 'othered' by their gender, sexuality or expression. I see clients on a weekly basis for short term or long term/open-ended work, with short term work ideally being a minimum of 12 weeks. I offer sessions online via video, or over the telephone. I work with individuals over 16, and with two or more people including couples, friends, family members or multiple partners.
