MR GAVIN JOHN REID
About the Therapist
Hi, I’m Gavin. My approach is warm, relational, grounded, and collaborative. I aim to create a therapeutic space where people feel able to speak openly without fear of judgement, pressure, or needing to censor parts of themselves.
I understand that starting therapy can feel daunting, particularly if previous experiences have left you feeling misunderstood, rejected, or emotionally unsafe. I believe therapy works best when people feel genuinely heard, accepted, and able to explore difficult experiences at their own pace.
As both a therapist and a gay man, I bring both professional knowledge and lived understanding into the therapy room. I know how experiences such as shame, fear of rejection, loneliness, identity struggles, or difficulties with belonging can affect the way people relate to themselves and others.
Alongside one to one therapy work, I also write extensively about LGBTQ+ mental health, shame, recovery, identity, relationships, and emotional wellbeing through my website and social media platforms.

I hold a first class BA(Hons) Degree in Counselling from Sheffield Hallam University
While this training provided a solid foundation in counselling practice, I found it did not adequately prepare me to work effectively with LGBTQ+ clients. I recognise the importance of culturally competent and inclusive practice, so I chose to pursue further specialist training. In June 2025, I completed a one-year Diploma in Gender, Sex and Relationship Diversity (GSRD) Therapy with Pink Therapy.
This advanced training has been incredibly valuable, significantly deepening my understanding of the diverse experiences and needs within LGBTQ+ communities. It has enhanced my ability to offer informed, affirming, and ethically sound support to clients navigating issues related to gender, sexuality, and relationship diversity. My approach is integrative and trauma informed, with a person centred foundation at the core. I draw from different therapeutic approaches depending on the needs of the individual, including attachment theory, compassion focused approaches, emotional regulation work, psychoeducation around the nervous system, and exploring patterns shaped through earlier life experiences and relationships.
I have particular experience working with LGBTQ+ mental health, minority stress, shame, identity formation, self esteem, trauma, relationships, perfectionism, boundaries, addiction and recovery, chemsex, emotional overwhelm, and the long term impact of growing up in environments where authenticity did not always feel safe.
I hold a BA (Hons) Degree in Counselling with First Class Honours and a Postgraduate Diploma in Gender, Sexual and Relationship Diversity (GSRD) Therapy with Pink Therapy. I’m also a registered member of the BACP and hold additional trauma informed training.
