Ian Derry
About the Therapist
My name is Ian and I am a qualified Person-Centred Counsellor and a registered member of both the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS).
Before training as a therapist, I spent over 40 years working as international cabin crew, meeting people from every background and witnessing the many ways humans love, grieve, and survive. That experience taught me to value difference, to listen deeply, and to never assume what someone’s story might be.
My work is grounded in empathy, respect, and curiosity. I bring warmth and patience to each session, but I’m also not afraid to gently challenge when it helps you see yourself more clearly. I believe humour, when appropriate, can sit comfortably alongside healing, sometimes laughter is part of what gets us through.

I work in a person-centred way, which means our sessions are guided by you. You decide what we explore and how deep we go. I offer a confidential, affirming space where you can untangle the experiences that have shaped you and start to live more authentically.
Clients often come to me feeling:
-
Tired of hiding parts of themselves or performing to be accepted
-
Unsure about identity, purpose, or belonging
-
Carrying shame or guilt from past experiences
-
Feeling isolated, misunderstood, or emotionally exhausted
-
Struggling with loss, grief, or the impact of rejection
-
Searching for meaning or direction later in life
Together, we explore your story with compassion and honesty. Therapy isn’t about fixing you, it’s about helping you feel whole again, comfortable in your own skin, and confident in who you are.
I’m particularly passionate about working with:
-
LGBTQ+ clients across the spectrum of identity and experience
-
Older LGBTQ+ adults processing life transitions, ageing, and visibility
-
People managing the emotional weight of discrimination or marginalisation
-
Anyone wanting to reconnect with their authentic self and rebuild self-worth
