James Carver
About the Therapist
I am James and I feel from childhood through to late adulthood, there are certain times when we all need help addressing problems and issues that may cause us emotional distress or make us feel overwhelmed. When you are experiencing these types of difficulties, you may benefit from the assistance of an experienced, trained professional. As a Professional counsellor I offer the caring, expert assistance that is often needed during these stressful times. A counsellor can help you identify the causes of your distress and assist you in finding the best ways to cope with the situation by changing behaviours that contribute to the problem or by finding constructive ways to deal with a situation that is beyond your personal control. Professional counsellors offer help in addressing many situations that cause emotional stress.

My initial training was working Person Centred. I completed a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling based in Psychodynamic theory (Psychodynamic counselling is based on empathy, acceptance and understanding) and working Inter Culturally. I have a primary certificate in CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) where examining our feelings, or emotions, and our behaviour, as well as our thinking may lead to change. I now work and am informed by Integrating these different theories. Every person is unique and I believe one theory does not fit all. Research indicates that the most probable factors determining a successful outcome to therapy are the personal qualities of therapist and client and the relationship between them, rather than the particular approach used. As part of my professional development I completed a BA Hons course in Integrative Counselling from the University of Surrey. I am an Accredited member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy) which means I "have achieved a substantial level of training and experience that has been approved by BACP". I work with the BACP code of ethics which can be found at www.bacp.co.uk. I am currently a Supervisor at the One To One Project in Kings Lynn. I also work for Bupa PMI (Private Medical), Work Place Options EAP (Employee Assistant Program), WPA and WPA Protocol (Private Health), Bupa EAP as a face to face and telephone counsellor.

EMDR Often when something traumatic happens, it seems to get locked in the brain with the original picture, sounds, thoughts, feelings, and so on. Since the experience is locked there, it continues to be triggered whenever a reminder comes up. It can be the basis for a lot of discomfort and sometimes a lot of negative emotions, such as fear and helplessness, that we can’t seem to control. These are really the emotions connected with the old experience that are being triggered. The eye movements we use in EMDR seem to unlock the system and allow your brain to process the experience. That may be what is happening in REM, or rapid eye movements, sleep, when our most intense dreaming takes place: The eye movements appear to be involved during the processing of unconscious material. The important thing to remember is that it is your own brain that will be doing the healing and that you are the one in control. Disturbing events can be stored in the brain in an isolated memory network. This prevents learning from taking place. The old material just keeps getting triggered over and over again. In another part of the brain, in a separate network, is most of the information you need to resolve it. It’s just prevented from linking up to the old stuff. Once we start processing with EMDR, the two networks can link up. New information can come to mind and resolve the old problems.
Flash Technique
The Flash Technique (FT) is a recently developed therapeutic intervention for reducing the disturbance associated with traumatic or other distressing memories. This allows the client to process traumatic memories without feeling distress.
