Jay Lever-King
About the Therapist
Hi! I'm Jay, a humanistic and integrative coach-therapist working with people who have endured a painful past impacting on their today. My first experience in counselling was when I was a teenager grappling with my own identity after having experienced a combination of traumas and experiences impacting on my confidence, self-esteem and identity, and so I withdrew from the world as I believed that this was as good as things got. I hadn’t a clue to what to expect in counselling, but that this was supposed to help. I went along with it because, in all honesty, I had nothing else to lose.
Counselling, pretty much, saved my sanity.
From here, my overall goal was to do exactly what my counsellor did for me – provide a safe and confidential space to come as you are, be as you are without criticism, shame or judgement.
I do what I do is because as somebody who has been on the other side of counselling, I know how vital it is to be able to talk and work through unwanted thoughts, difficult emotions and behaviour patterns that don't feel right but are used as a means of survival. I initially believed that my struggles were not ‘that serious’ because I wasn’t ill and that others had it far worse than me. You do not have to be ill, or in despair, to be finding things difficult - regardless how big or small the issue(s) may appear to you and/or others. Your mental health matters, always.

My approach takes parts from Attachment-based (Psychodynamic), Person-Centered/client-lead and Cognitive-Behavioural theories, along with the pro-activity of coaching to address the question we have in the fall-out - 'what's next?'Â
My approach is based on the raw and honest relationship we have as counsellor-client and the relationship you have with yourself, tailoring these sessions to you and where you are at, how you see yourself, the world around you, how you act and who you want to be, where you want to be and how you get there.
It is not easy, neither is it a 'quick fix', though what's worthwhile does not always come easy.
