Miss J Hughes
About the Therapist
Hi, I’m Jen. I’m a counsellor from the North East of England. Most of my work is online, so you can connect from wherever feels most comfortable for you. If you’d rather meet in person, though, I have a cosy room in central Houghton.
I’ve got training and experience (a BA in Counselling and years working with people), but honestly, what matters more is how I show up in sessions: with warmth, humour, and a genuine interest in supporting you to live in a way that feels right for you.
I’m an LGBTQ+ therapist, sex-positive, and experienced in supporting people in polyamorous and non-traditional relationships. My practice is neurodivergent-affirming, inclusive, and non-pathologising, which basically means I see you as a whole person, not a checklist of problems.
Before counselling, I worked in the domestic abuse sector. This gave me a deep understanding of how trauma and difficult relationships ripple into every part of life. It’s shaped my approach: always trauma-informed, always gentle, and always focused on building trust and safety.

I keep my style relaxed and conversational. At my core, I’m person-centred, which means you set the pace and focus of sessions. Sometimes that looks like exploring past experiences, sometimes it’s tackling unhelpful thought patterns (hello CBT), and sometimes it’s simply finding practical tools to get through the week.
What ties it all together is this: I focus on your strengths, not just your struggles.
In our sessions, you’ll find a calm, supportive space where you’re in control. Sometimes that looks like exploring the heavy stuff, sometimes it’s celebrating progress, and sometimes it’s even having a laugh together. My role is to help you uncover your strengths, build confidence, and develop tools that actually fit your life.
Whether you’re working through past pain, learning to set boundaries, or just trying to feel more comfortable in your own skin. I’ll walk alongside you as you figure it out. Together, we’ll look at what’s weighing you down, make sense of your emotions, and find practical ways forward; whether that’s setting healthier boundaries, handling stress differently, or learning to put yourself first without guilt.

Sessions are 50 minutes long and are £50 each; I offer a concession of £40. I also offer hour-and-a-half sessions at £75, should you feel you would like more time. Sessions can be weekly or fortnightly, and we can see each other for as long as you feel you need my support.
I offer online sessions, but I do have a room that I can rent in Houghton-Le-Spring if you prefer in person. I primarily use Google Meet for video calls, but I can use Zoom or Doxy if you prefer those. We can also do phone calls or a ‘live chat’ session via video call, where we can type to each other with cameras and audio off, if that makes you feel more comfortable.
