Karen L Pollock
About the Therapist
I am a qualified and experienced therapist and supervisor in private practice, working online and face to face in the North East of England. I am anti oppresive in stance, which means I never believe the goal of therapy is to make you OK with injustice, prejudice and discrimination and actively work to dismantle those oppressions inside, and outside the therapy room. An understanding of the different ways structural oppression interesects on individuals informs how we would work together, recogonising how race, ethnicity, age, class, disability, neurostyle, sex worker history and status, migrant status, gender, body size and shape, sexuality, and other identities impact our individual life experiences. I take a developmental stance in supervision, but always with the knowledge that we are fellow professionals, whose collaboration is one which should be collegiate, respectful of difference and non heirarchical.

My original qualification in counselling (Post Graduate Diploma in Theraputic Counselling) included 100 hours of supervised volunteer counselling in organisations who provided low-cost or free counselling to clients from very diverse backgrounds. It cemented within me the need for therapy to be more affordable and accessible to all. My initial training was person centered, in essence this means believing you, the client, is the expert in your own life. I was fortunate that my department encouraged us to use and develop skills from all schools of counselling. I have undergone specific extra training and am experienced in working with: gender and sex diversities including; asexuality, multisexuality (bi, pan and other non mono sexualitites), non binary identities, polyamorous and consensual non monogamies including swinging, kink/bdsm, trans and gender questioning clients. Neurodivergence including autism and adhd Working with sex workers domestic abuse including coercive control child abuse bereavement I graduated with my Post Graduate Diploma in Gender, Sexual and Relationship Diversity Therapy in 2019, it is one of the few courses in the world to cover this area in depth and I am an Advanced Accredited Gender, Sex and Relationship Diversities Therapist as awarded by Pink Therapy and Pink Therapy Clinical Associate. I qualified as a Supervisor in 2021, awarded by The Northern Guild Of Psychotherapy. I take a developmental and anti oppressive approach to supervision, and offer one off specialist consultations as well as ongoing sessions. My publications include chapters in Non Binary Lives, and anthology of intersecting identities; Queer Psychotherapy (2022) and a number of articles and papers on kink, gender, sex and relationship diversity, and working outdoors for the BACP, Huffington Post, and others.
