Lex Mabbott
About the Therapist
My name is Lex Mabbott and I am a therapist, working in Nottingham and remotely.
After a career in the book trade, I decided to retrain as a therapist. My interest in mental health started as personal one: I wanted to feel better, and therapy really helped me with that. I started to advocate for access to mental health services, as my experience has been transformative. I then decided to use my lived experience to help others by training as a therapist. I trained at the renowned Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute, and received a first class honours degree in Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy.
In addition to my private practice, I work as a therapist at the Nottingham Women’s Centre, where I specialise in working with women and non-binary people who have survived trauma and face multiple disadvantages.
I attend regular clinical supervision and engage in my own personal therapy to ensure I am working safely and ethically. I am a member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and I adhere to their ethical code.
For self-care, I enjoy walking my dog, reading, cooking, and crocheting.

I follow a Humanistic and Integrative model of therapy, which reflects my philosophy about life. I don’t think people are born bad, or choose to have issues, I believe that our experiences and relationships shape us into who we are. However, I believe that with the right encouragement, nourishment, and love, we can experience growth. Therefore, I seek to offer a warm, nurturing relationship that will facilitate change. I draw on a variety of theoretical frameworks to help this happen, but the common factor is offering you empathy, acceptance and human connection.
I specialise in working with people who have experienced trauma in childhood, and who may now have a diagnosis of a personality disorder, ADHD or Autism. These labels can feel overwhelming, but I always see the human being first, and seek to offer you a space without judgement or stigma.
I value working with difference and diversity, and I understand that the world outside the therapy room door shapes our experiences. I work with an intersectional awareness of gender, race, sexuality and other identity markers to enhance my ability to more fully understand what your experience of walking through the world might be, as well as learn more about my own. I have a special interest in working with LGBTQIAA+ people, as I know from my own experience that living life as one’s authentic self, in an identity that encapsulates who you are, is vital to health and happiness.
