Andy Rushton
About the Therapist
Hi, I’m Andy, welcome to my counselling service. I offer a confidential, safe space where I can help you explore your concerns without shame or judgment. I won’t tell you how to live, I won’t pathologise who you are, instead I will help you to understand yourself better and through that understanding, help you find what’s right for you. I'm based in Harringay, North London and offer both video and in-person counselling.
I have experience of working with: Anxiety • Trauma • Post-Trauma • Depression • Gender • Gender Identity • Sexuality • Asexuality • Marriage • Diverse Relationships • Anger • Workplace Problems • Relationships • Bullying • Confidence • Bereavement • Childhood Abuse • Domestic Abuse • Physical Abuse • Sexual Abuse • Personal Development • Family Problems • Step-Families • Self-Esteem • Self-Harm • Divorce • Betrayal • Stress • Kink • BDSM • Sex Work and many others. I'm based in Harringay, North London and offer both video and in-person counselling.

I trained at Eastleigh College in Hampshire and qualified with a Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling in January 2006. I then accumulated experience over three years. In October 2009 I gained Accreditation from BACP. I have since become a member of UKCP, gaining my Accreditation with them in November 2013. I felt that my basic training in therapy was weak on diversity, so filled the gap with specialist training from Pink Therapy on diverse Gender, Sexuality and Relationships. I'm committed to anti-racism and more generally to anti-oppressive practice in my work.

I work within the humanistic traditions of counselling and especially the person-centred approach. This is a way of working that emphasises the working relationship as the most important part of therapy, which questions hierarchy in society and in the therapy itself. I started my career in youth work working in a charity that was open to all, setting me up with a good practical training in working with diversity. I have since set up in private practice and now work only with adults. I recognise my own many privileges as a white, straight, middle-class, neurotypical, abled cis man. I am an ally to people who are in a disadvantaged position, due to prejudices around ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class and ability. I understand what happens when these intersect. I work with people of all ethnicities, I recognise the impact of whiteness on all aspects of life, the historic basis of racism and how it disadvantages everyone. I work with people of all sexualities, genders and gender alignments who are in diverse relationships including monogamy, non-monogamy or polyamory. I work with people whose lifestyle is misunderstood and subject to disapproval such as kinksters or sex workers. I have experience of working with: Anxiety • Trauma • Post-Trauma • Depression • Gender • Gender Identity • Sexuality • Asexuality • Marriage • Diverse Relationships • Anger • Workplace Problems • Relationships • Bullying • Confidence • Bereavement • Childhood Abuse • Domestic Abuse • Physical Abuse • Sexual Abuse • Personal Development • Family Problems • Step-Families • Self-Esteem • Self-Harm • Divorce • Betrayal • Stress • Kink • BDSM • Sex Work and many others.

If you are a counselling student, then having counselling is part of the training. I am trained in the Person-Centred Approach and so can see students of this approach or those taking a wider Humanistic training. I can sometimes offer concessions to student counsellors so please ask.
