Jess Murray Therapy and Supervision
About the Therapist
I offer attachment based, trauma informed, emotion focused psychotherapy to help you with internal problems. This might include; anxiety, depression, hopelessness, experience of overwhelm or problems arising in relationships.
I often work with clients who have tried over types of therapy and not had the outcomes they wished for or found it got to the root of their issue.
I practice ISTDP; a highly effective model of therapy that works deeply, allowing us to access the unconscious emotional processes underlying the issues you want my help with. We will work collaboratively, paying close attention to your embodied experience as we explore your issues.
Often I help clients notice and take control of habitual ways of responding to themselves or to others.
Alongside ISTDP, I am influenced by Internal Family Systems: working in caring, curious and attentive way with the 'parts' of the Self that come up in different situations.
My work is psychodynamic and considers early experiences, but with a focus on how these are impacting your current life. Often we are unconsciously carrying around emotions for the past, perhaps continuing to avoid them in ways which were adaptive and helpful when we were younger and in a different circumstance.
Now however, those emotions can be triggered and either overwhelm us, or cause us to resort to habits which hurt or limit us. Often clients find that with time they are able to fully and safely experience deep emotions and so no longer need those old, limiting habits.
I can offer regular supervision to therapists practicing or interested in practicing ISTDP, as well as one off 'case formulation' supervisions to therapist working in other modalities who would like to use the unique tools offered by ISTDP to help them understand what is happening for their client and different options to get unstuck.

My standard sessions are weekly 90 minute appointments. This allows much more progress to be made in each session whilst still keeping you safe by having time to process what arises.
In some cases, for example when clients travel from other parts of the country, I offer 'block therapy'. This consists of 3 hour long sessions, at less regular intervals.
Research shows longer sessions mean less therapy (and less expense) should be needed overall.
I offer short, medium and long term work. My preference is to work with a specific number of sessions as I find clients are more likely to acheive the outcomes they want this way.
Before we start working together I usually arrange a short phone call so we can get to know each other a little and discuss the 'logistics' of our sessions.
I have been counselling clients through charities and in private practice since 2015 and have many more years of experience working with adults and children who need extra support including through play work, horticultural therapy and domestic abuse support work.
