Katie Merritt
About the Therapist
I'm Katie Merritt, a psychotherapist with a Postgraduate Diploma (Level 7) in Psychotherapy and Counselling and specialist GSRD (Gender, Sex and Relationship Diversity) accreditation. I'm a Registered Member of BACP (MBACP).
Before training as a therapist I spent years working in the creative industries. That background shapes how I think, about identity, about the stories we tell about ourselves, about the gap between who we are in public and who we are in private, intersecting with story in a fluid and flexible way.
I'm also co-founder of Queer Spaces, a community organisation offering creative wellbeing experiences in LGBTQIA+ spaces in London. My connection to queer communities isn't theoretical. It lives outside the therapy room in the wider collective unconcious.
Clinically, I work integratively, drawing on psychodynamic, person-centred, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) approaches. My practice is relational and depth-focused, which means we work with patterns, with the body, with what's underneath. I'm intellectually curious and I don't do formulaic, binary, overly definitive.
I work with:
- LGBTQIA+ people at any stage of identity or coming out
- Trans and non-binary clients
- People in kink and BDSM communities
- Non-monogamous, polyamorous, and relationship anarchist clients
- Queer people working in the creative industries
- Anxiety, shame, complex trauma, and minority stress
- Anyone who's felt like too much, or not enough, in a therapy room before
- Bi- | Pansexual
- Kink - BDSM
- Queer

My background isn't just in therapy. Before training I spent years as a theatre director, actor, and musician and that work gave me something that no clinical training quite replicates: a way of thinking that is fluid, non-definitive, and expansive. An attentiveness to rhythm and pattern, to what's barely said, to silence, to the beat that gets missed. To the spaces between things as much as the things themselves.
That sensibility is the fabric of how I work. Therapy, like art, doesn't resolve, it opens. I'm not looking for conclusions. I'm interested in what's underneath, what keeps recurring, what you've learned to edit out.
My training brought me into contact with a varied client group — queer clients, older adults, people in high-pressure caring professions — giving me an early grounding in working across difference and complexity.
I work integratively, drawing on psychodynamic, person-centred, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) approaches, oriented towards long-term, open-ended work. I hold a Postgraduate Diploma (Level 7) in Psychotherapy and Counselling with specialist GSRD accreditation, and I am a Registered Member of BACP (MBACP).
