About my previous experiences.
I have worked in the NHS, as well as specialist services and third sector organisations. After qualifying as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner and obtaining experience in primary care, I gained a place in the Doctorate of Clinical Psychology at University of Hertfordshire, where I still work on Thursdays and Fridays as a Senior Lecturer.
The University of Hertfordshire has a strong focus on social justice, which has shaped my practice. When I am with my clients, I keep all the theories in my mind lightly because I am aware that most of the therapeutic models have been developed in western countries. I attempt to be aware of the impact of colonization in my daily practice. Practically, this means that I when providing therapy, I try as much as I can to tune in and how I feel and look and observe the person that are having in front of me, keeping all the theories on the side. I keep the therapeutic relationship at the center of the way I offer therapy.
What do I think therapy is?
I believe that therapy can be either a space to heal previous and/or current wounds as well as a place for self exploration. I believe that there is always (psychological) work to do, if we want, and we have the resources to do so. I provide therapy and attend personal therapy myself too.
What is therapy with me like?
When providing therapy, I strive to provide a warm, compassionate, inclusive space for my clients.Â
