Mel Ciavucco - eating disorders, disordered eating & body image counselling
About the Therapist
Hi, I'm Mel, I'm an Integrative Counsellor offering online sessions. I have experience in working with disordered eating, eating disorders and body image issues. Eating problems can impact anyone of any size, gender, age, race, class and ability, and I often work with people in larger bodies who have been impacted by weight biases and discrimination. I particularly honour the intersecting of identities, the impact of weight stigma, and the common overlapping of gender, neurodivergence and eating distress. A label of an eating disorder is not required, I am passionate about helping anyone with any anxieties around food and bodies.
I also offer training and workshops for individuals and professionals on body image, weight stigma and disordered eating. I've worked for eating disorder charities for many years and have a passion for helping people with all kinds of body image and eating concerns. I also work with people experiences other difficulties too, including low self-esteem, low confidence, feeling down, depression, anxiety, work stress, identity issues, and more.
I have also worked in domestic abuse and sexual violence services, both with victims and perpetrators. I delivered behaviour change and "anger management" programmes and interventions for perpetrators of domestic abuse. I help people manage difficult emotions such as anger and shame.
I work with an understanding of the impact of past trauma, attachment difficulties and socio-cultural issues. I am dedicated to working on offering an anti-oppressive practice. I say "working on" as I feel this is continued learning and takes continual self-reflection and awareness building. My counselling practice has grown out of my passion for social justice, my own struggles in the past, and my aims for inclusive and adaptable modern counselling practices.

Integrative - I studied a mix of theories and modalities including person-centred, psychodynamic, existential, CBT, solution-focused, internal family systems, compassion-focused and more.Â
Pluralistic - my training was pluralistic which means I am client-led, adaptable and collaborative.
Neuro-affirmative - I recognise the natural diversity of learning needs in the world and the need for affirmative care for those with Autism, ADHD, dyslexia (and more) and the recognition of the discrimination and systemic inequalities neurodivergent people may face.
Trauma-informed - I recognise the impact of past trauma, childhood development and attachment in the early years, and the trauma of facing discrimination, as well as inter-generational trauma.
Anti-oppressive - I strive for my practice to be anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive meaning I recognise systemic inequalities and power dynamics, and the impact of this in the counselling room. My commitment to this involves continued self-reflection and learning on my privilege and intersections of my own identity.
