Phil Tyson PhD - Online Psychotherapist and Business Coach
About the Therapist
I have worked across sectors — as a trainee insurance underwriter; counselling and interpersonal communication skills trainer; psychology lecturer; sociologist at a Silicon Valley systems research laboratory; BA Health Studies course leader; trainee therapist in an NHS psychiatric day unit; massage and sports-injury therapist; CEO of an HIV charity; clinical supervisor; regional radio contributor; writer; and even had a go at stand‑up comedy!
I did not always enjoy or excel in every role, but each experience deepened my commitment to helping people. Since 1995 I have worked as a psychotherapist and business coach in private practice.
In addition to being a Senior Accredited Psychotherapist I am also a Chartered Psychologist and a sociologist.

I am trained in four psychotherapeutic approaches, and tailor treatment to each client’s needs and goals.
- Person‑centred therapy: I create a warm, respectful, non‑judgemental space where empathy and authenticity help you feel understood and able to explore change.
- Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy (CBT): I use evidence‑based techniques to help you identify and change unhelpful thoughts and behaviours.
- Creative Hypnotherapy: I work with your imagination and focused relaxation to support new ways of thinking and feeling.
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing): I offer a structured, trauma‑focused method to help process distressing memories and reduce their emotional impact.
Addiction and recovery: my understanding is informed by long‑term participation in 12‑Step and Buddhist Recovery groups, which I integrate respectfully, if helpful
Neuroscience‑informed option: I partner with Flow Neuroscience to offer clinician‑led tDCS (gentle transcranial electrical stimulation) as an adjunct for some clients with Major Depressive Disorder.
When clients wish to explore work, business or systemic issues I draw upon my undergraduate studies in Business and Finance, postgraduate studies in both occupational psychology and organisational research and my work history in both private and public sectors. I combine psychological, sociological and organisational perspectives to understand and resolve difficulties in context.
