About the Therapist
Prior to training as a counsellor and psychotherapist, I worked in the voluntary sector, running services for people leaving prison, and their families. When in my mid-20s I began to feel the bite of the emotional and relational confusions I was experiencing at that time in my life, I sought therapeutic help. I was lucky enough to find a therapist who understood the challenges of belonging to a sexual minority in a heteronormative world, and to listen non-defensively when they didn't. That process was life-changing and invigorating, and ultimately what propelled me to work in this field. During my training in integrative counselling and psychotherapy, I specialised in working with issues around gender and sexuality, and with clients who belong to minority groups in these areas. I understand that being LGBTQ+ is a facet of who you are, and not the whole of you, but equally that coming up against a world still too full of ignorance and prejudice, and where your gender and sexual identities fall outside of the norm, that you might also have particular challenges or experiences not always understood by mainstream psychology. As queer people, many of us are used to a level of introspection and self-enquiry that people who fall within more normative ranges of experience don't always have to engage with. For us, it is often a matter of necessity and survival. To that end, I start with the strengths that you already have. You've come this far in your life, and not done so through sheer luck, so I respect that, and want to understand and to celebrate the way you've managed so far, as well as to hear about the price you may have had to pay along the way.
My therapeutic approach is integrative, and rooted in attachment-based, relational, and somatic trauma therapies. My training has led me to understand the way that early experiences in our family of origin can create enduring templates for patterns of relationship across the lifespan, as well as how these are experienced mentally, emotionally, and physiologically in the body. I can use my training to support you to explore your own unconscious patterns of relationship, and how these might be playing out in your life in ways that keep you stuck somewhere that no longer serves you. Together we can also begin to explore new possibilities.
Finally, my approach is proudly inclusive and anti-discriminatory. I warmly welcome people of all class backgrounds, ages, cultures, races, ethnicities, genders, neurodiversity, and ability.
