Ben Banks Therapy
About the Therapist
My name is Ben Banks. I use he/him pronouns and will be pleased to use yours. While I now identify as a gay man, I hold that loosely, having had different experiences as a child and as a young adult. We all experience difficult and painful things in life and we all need other people to lean on at times, to help us through some of the more painful or challenging situations or to help us grow into kind, loving people. I consider it a sign of enormous bravery that you’re thinking about coming to see me for therapy and reading my website is the first step on your journey towards feeling better and showing up differently in the world. Emotional distress can be caused by lots of different things, most commonly: Past experiences, such as challenges with parents, siblings and childhood trauma Concerns about the future, such as the impending loss of a job or loved one Challenges that you are experiencing right now, such as unhappiness in your relationships and feeling down Life can feel heavy and bleak, like there’s no hope and that nothing will change. You might be struggling with emotional states like depression, misery, grief or anxiety or a feeling of dissatisfaction with life that you simply can’t shake. Therapy with a skilled psychotherapist can help you make changes, both in how you feel about life, and more widely. Things that feel overwhelming today will begin to get easier and over time, through our work together, life will get brighter.

When you've called or sent an email enquiry, we'll arrange a time for a brief phone call to set up an initial consultation, either online or in person out of premises I share with colleagues in either Montpelier or Orchard Street. This safe space is held for you and what’s discussed is governed by our confidentiality policy. During this initial consultation, we'll begin creating a working relationship by talking about what brings you to therapy and confirming what day and time we'll meet each week.  During Sessions Everything is up for discussion. Whether that’s challenging family relationships or the intergenerational trauma of systemic oppression, there is no conversation we cannot have. Sometimes what we want to talk about is too painful to approach directly, so there are colouring pens and pencils, coloured clay and stones and shells that are available to help communicate things we might find challenging to say. Together we’ll be curious and supportive of your experience, become aware of some of the repeating patterns of relating that no longer serve your growth and wellbeing and slowly, gently, life will start feeling warmer and brighter.

While I have completed seven years of counselling & psychotherapy training and have been a working psychotherapist for the last year, I have yet to complete my Masters, so am able to offer considerably reduced price sessions on a sliding scale from £45 to £65 depending on your income, for both in-person and online work. Please note that we will need to work together weekly in order to develop a strong therapeutic alliance upon which to build the rest of our work together.
