My main therapeutic approach is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). CBT looks at how your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations and actions interact together. Most of the time they interact in helpful ways, but sometimes they can contribute to anxiety or low mood. I help people understand what may be contributing to these unhelpful interactions, and how they can overcome them.
My other main approach, Interpersonal therapy (IPT) helps improve mood by focusing on improving communication skills and resolving current relationship difficulties. It can help support with adapting to stressful life changes, building social skills, reducing isolation, resolving conflict and processing grief and loss.
I also aim that positive outcomes from therapy are sustainable in the long term once therapy ends. To achieve this we develop comprehensive keeping well plans together, that outline the learning from therapy, any techniques and materials used, and what to do should you experience a setback.
Alongside my CBT and IPT training, I also draw upon my personal experiences and values, to help people understand issues such as minority stress, internalised stigma, family relationships, or the impact of discrimination.
