LGBTQ+ Affirmative Psychotherapy (Fitzrovia, Central London, W1 and Online)
About the Therapist
My name is Matthew Frener, and I am an Integrative Therapist and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Practitioner working in Private Practice.Â
My work is shaped by lived experience, specialist training, and years of practice across a range of settings. I support LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent clients with trauma, compulsive behaviours, addiction, and eating disorders.
From a young age, I felt different and out of place in a heteronormative world. I struggled with food, body image, and a deep sense of unworthiness. I learnt to shape-shift to fit in and chased validation, and I turned to substances to quiet the noise inside. Over time, this left me feeling disconnected from myself.
Therapy helped me understand the roots of these patterns, loosen the grip of shame, and build a more compassionate and grounded relationship with myself. As I developed safety and self-worth, I found I no longer needed the coping strategies I once relied on, because I began to feel more deserving of love, belonging, and care.
Years later, receiving an ADHD diagnosis brought clarity to lifelong experiences of neurodivergence. That understanding deepened my self-compassion, and it continues to inform how I work with neurodivergent clients today.
My belief that recovery and change are possible, with the right support, is one of the reasons I retrained as a therapist. I aim to offer a space where difference is welcomed, your coping makes sense, and we can move at a pace that feels safe enough to go deeper.
Before becoming a therapist, I spent several years working in the theatre and arts sector. That background still shapes me. I often encourage clients to reconnect with creativity in any form that fits, because creative expression can be therapeutic in its own right.

My professional experience includes working in private clinics, leading specialist treatment centres for addiction recovery and eating disorders, and within Priory Group. This background supports me to work confidently with complexity, risk awareness, and the realities of change in a compassionate, non-shaming way.
My work is trauma-informed, neuro-affirming, and anti-oppressive.
If you're:
- Stuck in painful cycles, using food, substances, or other compulsive behaviours to cope?
- Trying to hold it together, but masking and exhausted, or feeling close to falling apart?
- Carrying shame, guilt, or harsh self-criticism, and longing for acceptance and understanding?
- Living in survival mode, on edge, shut down, or feeling unsafe in your body?
- Feeling unseen or misunderstood, navigating identity in systems that were not built for you?
Therapy can offer you space to understand your patterns, process the impact of the past, develop self-compassion, and build healthier ways of coping, so you feel more grounded, connected, authentic, and free to live the life you want.
How I can support you
I support clients to:
- Build emotional regulation and stability by developing coping strategies that are supportive rather than harmful
- Process trauma and shame, loosening what keeps you stuck and reducing the weight of the past
- Develop self-understanding, acceptance, and belonging, so you can feel more at ease in your own skin, set boundaries, and integrate your identity and differences into everyday life
This work can help shift you from survival into steadier balance and freedom, while fostering authenticity, congruence, and a more nourishing connection with yourself and others.
How we will work together
- Therapeutic relationship first: I work relationally, because the quality of the therapeutic bond is closely linked with outcomes.
- Exploring patterns: We will look at how past experiences shape thoughts, feelings, and behaviours today.
- Whole-person focus: We will consider different areas of your life to support sustainable wellbeing.
- Tailored to you: I integrate a range of approaches to meet your needs. This may include relational and humanistic therapy, DBT skills, parts work, psychodynamic and developmental approaches, attachment-based work, and inner child work.
- Skills-based and creative: Where helpful, I encourage self-expression and growth through skills teaching and creative outlets.
Anti-oppressive, inclusive practice
I am committed to anti-oppressive, intersectional practice. I recognise that identity, culture, and systemic power can shape mental health, safety, and belonging, and that discrimination and marginalisation can leave real psychological and relational impacts.
In practice, this means:
- Cultural awareness: We consider identity, culture, and social context as part of your story.
- Power and collaboration: Your lived experience is centred, and we work transparently and respectfully.
- Trauma-informed care: We explore how trauma and oppression can shape emotions, relationships, and coping strategies.
- Support navigating systems: We make space for the realities of the world you are living in, alongside your personal healing.
Therapy should be a space where all aspects of your identity are acknowledged and validated. I aim to offer a space where you feel heard, respected, and supported to explore your experiences without fear of judgement or prejudice.
