I am an experienced psychotherapist, professor and senior higher education leader. I am also a gay person and a dad, and I have ‘lived’ as well as professional experience of the challenges these identities can bring. Alongside my psychotherapy practice, I have served on university executive boards and as a Pro Vice-Chancellor. This has given me a particular understanding of responsibility, leadership, professional identity and the pressures carried by LGBTQ+ people who are used to being relied upon. I’m Ben Ross (MNCPS Acc.), a Gestalt counsellor working right opposite Liverpool Street Station, London. I trained in counselling at the Gestalt Centre, London, and am an accredited registrant member of The National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). For the right to live and exist openly. This Pride Month, I’m thinking of everyone who has had to fight, hide, explain or defend who they are. My work is LGBTQIA+ affirming, trauma-informed and neurodivergence-aware. I often offer support with anxiety, depression, shame, self-worth, relationships, identity and belonging. I try to hold identity as something layered, lived and personal. I’m interested in the emotional cost of hiding, adapting, performing, or making yourself acceptable to others, while staying curious about power, culture, belonging, safety, and the systems people have had to live within.

From navigating trauma and distress, to exploring identity and intimacy, my practice is rooted in flexibility, collaborative trust, and evidence-based care. I believe that therapy allows you to take a more active role in understanding and experiencing your emotions, thoughts and beliefs. When we are not aware of our patterns, it can mean we act out certain behaviours, or experience certain feelings, without knowing why. And while we might be able to tolerate this for some time – perhaps even for a long time – I believe there is a difference between simply surviving and truly living.

Hi, I’m Sam. I’m a relational psychodynamic therapist based in East London.
